The Irish in Britain Census Campaign: "How Irish Are You?"

Thank you...

The team here at the Federation of Irish Societies – the organisation that brought you the ‘How Irish Are You?’ census campaign – would like to say a hearty thank you for making our campaign such a success!

Aimed at tackling the undercount of the Irish in official government statistics (based on an undercount of the Irish in the 2001 Census), we organised a national campaign to unite Irish community, voluntary and business organisations to encourage 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation Irish to register their Irish ethnicity in the 2011 Census.

With help from across the community, we achieved:

  • 35 pieces of local, regional and national press and online coverage including an editorial in the Independent and the Sun (see links below)
  • 5 successful regional launches
  • 14 features on local, regional and national radio, 9 of which were on the BBC
  • Coverage on ITV and Channel 5’s the Wright Stuff
  • 2754 Facebook Fans
  • Over 70,000 campaign leaflets and flyers delivered to Irish communities up and down Britain
  • 27 signatures on the Early Day Motion titled: ‘Census Awareness and the Irish Community’

So what's next...?

It will be 18 months before the numeric results from the 2011 Census are published, so till then we won’t know how successful we’ve been at encouraging all the Irish people in Britain to tick the Irish ethnicity box.

In the meantime we are delighted with the way the community (that includes you) has embraced the campaign to make it its own and at just how many people came out to celebrate their Irish roots. Indeed, the number of individuals like you who played a part was incredible and it is to you whom we owe a debt of gratitude.

The campaign is a fantastic boost to our work as we endeavour always to put the issues of the Irish community right at the heart of the government’s agenda. There is however, always more to do. We will be harnessing the momentum of the campaign to continue to serve, strengthen and celebrate the Irish community in Britain. We hope you’ll be with us all the way…
